In the first round, the South Island losing to Wellington 20-32 was surprise, as was Counties-Manukau traveling down to the Central Vipers and being defeated 16-30. By the third round, the team from the capital had won all three of their matches. The only other unbeaten side was Auckland who had played two games. They met in Wellington in round four and it was Auckland that took the spoils 34-20.
In round five, Auckland traveled to the South Island and lost its unbeaten record, 30-20. When round six was completed, Welllington's season had been turned on its head losing the last three matches including a shock away 42-4 defeat at the hands of second from bottom Waicoa Bays. Auckland squeaked home 22-20 against fellow Auckland team Counties-Manukau.
In the final round seven, Counties-Manukau hosted the South Island and won 40-32 but it wasn't enough for them to make the final. The table at the conclusion was:

The final pitted Auckland against the South Island in Auckland. the half time score was 20-10 to the hosts and they went on to take their second final 44-34.
