The final was never going to be one sided, with both sides well matched. The Kiwi Ferns the slightly more robust side while the Jillaroos the have the edge in slickness. It was the Australians who took an early lead but the Kiwis came back to lead 10-6 with the half time hooter not far away. However, a try just before the break gave the hosts a 12-10 lead.
In the second half, the Jillaroos took control to lead 22-10 and with 10 minutes to go, looked home and hosed. The Kiwis came back with with a converted try and there was everything to play for. The locals hung on and even managed a one point field goal at the end.
Final score: Australia 23-16 New Zealand.
