UK SL Attendances : 2018 Season

It would have to be said that while RL attendances have grown well over the recent decades, the past few years has seen slight regressions. To see history from 1995 to 2017, simply click here to see what I mean.

Below is a the latest data. Last year I confused a few with not being clear about what part of the season I was basing the numbers on. This year I've expanded it with a more comprehensive summary. Hopefully it covers all bases. Leigh was replaced by Hull KR.

First up, the 2017 figures are for the 30 rounds of Super League, but excluding the Magic Weekend. The 2018 column is the same criteria. The +/- is increase or decrease on the two columns before, Then comes the 'Reg' figures, which are for the first 23 rounds of 2018, or eleven home games allowing for Magic Weekend's exemption from the data. 'P/O' is the last seven rounds of of 2018, either three or four (home) games depending on where they finished. It also covers both the Super 8's and Qualifiers. Got that?

Rk Team 2017 2018 +/- Reg P/O

1 Leeds 14,711 12,359 -16% 12,807 11,126

2 Hull FC 11,375 11,804 +4% 12,022 10,446

3 Wigan 13,669 11,528 -16% 11,773 10,853

4 St Helens 10,946 11,231 +3% 11,316 10,550

5 Warrington 10,164 9,795 -4% 9,973 8,989

6 Catalans 8,612 8,125 -6% 8,354 7,284

7 Hull KR - 7,873 n/a 7,900 7,619

8 Castleford 8,779 7,751 -12% 7,848 7,485

9 Huddersfield 5,873 5,471 -7% 5,721 4,553

10 Wakefield 5,269 5,011 -5% 5,244 4,155

11 Widnes 5,587 4,624 -17% 4,931 3,618

12 Salford 3,904 2,826 -28% 2,706 2,314

- Leigh 6,301 - n/a - -

It is interesting to note that the play-off attendances for 2018 were lower than the regular season in every case. I then broke the season down into thirds, the first third of the season the average attendance was 8,550, the second 8,250 and third 7,900. That is consistent with earlier seasons, I've noticed.

The total attendance for the year was 1.5 million, down 6%. Hopefully Salford can find some fans and the new side replacing Widnes in 2018 can also improve matters.

PS. Since writing this, it has transpired that London will replace Widnes so that will be a negative as far as attendances are concerned.

Hello, Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I have only delved back as far as SL and haven't tried to go further so cannot answer your question. I will look into it and respond to your inquiry.

Still to look it up but will do if I can find the data.

Hi, I am doing research on the demand for Rugby League for a University project and I am just wondering where you find the stats for the attendance throughout the seasons? Many thanks.

Hi Mia, Actually one of the biggest headaches about RL is finding data and even seeing weekly highlights videos is all but impossible. It's a case of scratching around and trying to find what you can. I'd like to say they are all in one spot somewhere but that isn't the case.

To unknown, I've now been adding earlier years so it can now be seen how attendances before SL were a fair amount lower.
