UK Elite Teams By Season : 2016

To kick off this long and insightful series, I decided to go from the present and head back into time. The purpose is to quantify how a team went, especially rewarding the best achievers. First up the round part, which for my reckoning went for 23 rounds.

2016 is also known as Super League XXI, or the 21st edition. Officially the winner of the league is after another seven games but four teams have dropped off and this top eight is jockeying for a top four playoffs place. If I did it the official way, the 5th to 8th places would be the same in the first two columns below.

Now that's clear, the winner of the first section was Hull FC, gaining the maximum 20 points. Then the top eight went into the finals competition, with Wigan overcoming Warrinton in the grand final by 12-6. Finally the Challenge Cup had Hull FC defeating Warrington to take the trophy 12-10.

So the three at the top were close with Hull FC taking two 20 point rewards, Wigan one and Warrington three seconds. How rough was that! In both final Warrington missed out on by small margins.

In the million pound game to see who would retain Super League status, it was between two Super League sides. Leigh Centurions had already secured a promotion already. In a classic encounter the home side Hull KR had a safe lead of 18-10 with less than two minutes on the clock. Somehow Salford managed to score two unconverted tries and it was 18-18. Then in extra time a whopping field goal from half way had Salford through 19-18. It was a game that defied the odds in an unbelievable way and a fitting end to the season.
