UK Elite Teams By Season : 2015

2015 is also known as Super League XX, or the 20th edition. I need to explain a slight difference to the way I do things as opposed to what is actually done. Officially the winner of the league is after another seven games but four teams have dropped off and this top eight is jockeying for a top four playoffs place. If I did it the official way, the 5th to 8th places would be the same in the first two columns below. This was the first year of this new system so from now on not an issue.

For 2015 the number of teams in the first division (Super league) was reduced from fourteen to twelve. The sacrificial lambs were Bradford and London, the two lowest finishing teams in 2014. A playoff system would decide future promotion or relegation, culminating in a one off match called the Million Pound game (mentioned later).

This was the year of the Leeds Rhinos as they took out the treble. They won the league by one point from St Helens, took out the grand final 22-20 over Wigan and overwhelmed Hull KR 50-0 in the Challenge Cup final. Saints valiantly tried to keep up, with a second in the league and two semi final places but fell short by some distance.

In the million pound game to decide who would gain or regain a Super League spot, Wakefield stayed up with a 24-16 victory over Championship (division two) club Bradford. Therefore the league teams would be the same for 2016 in the first division (Super league).
