In the first round, the big game was Auckland versus Counties-Manukau in what is a local derby and two top sides. Auckland were the victors 28-16. A big second round result was Wellington defeating Auckland in an away fixture for them 24-18. The surprise of the third round was the South Island losing at home to Waicoa Bay 34-36.
The fifth round an important clash between Counties-Manukau and Wellington had the South Auckland side narrowly win 34-30, a result that would affect who made the final.
