The international calendar for RL has never been busier. There are numerous matches being played, this article just covers the friendly ones over three months, not any that were part of a series or tournament.
14th July, Chrudim, Czech Rep:
Czech Rep 64-10 Hungary
Hungary is certainly active in the international scene. They traveled to the Czech Rep for a one-off friendly match. The hosts raced away to a 30-6 half time lead and outscored their visitors 34-4 in the second period for a convincing victory. Winger Oldrich Chrbolka scored three tries in an 11 minute period, scoring four in total.
1st September, Capelle aan den IJssel, Netherlands:
Netherlands 38-22 Germany.
Germany went to Rotterdam to try to win the Griffin Cup, the hosts securing it in 2017 with a 30-18 victory in Germany. They rested many players from the Czech WC qualifying game and during the match, they also had injuries which had them running out of steam later in the game. The larger Dutch forwards took advantage and the score blew out a bit.
1st September, Stavanger, Norway:
Norway 76-0 Poland
Poland took its first step in the world of International RL by going to the Stavanger Stadion to take on a much more experienced home side. So it proved with the scoreline. Both sides used local players, with Norway using many young players. The hosts took a 44-0 lead by halftime and by the end had run in 14 tries in a ruthless display.
22nd September, Gothenburg, Sweden:
Sweden 4-24 Netherlands
In variable conditions, the visitors took an early lead and went in at halftime 16-4. The second half was tight but Sweden could not break down the Netherlands defence.
28nd September, Sydney, Australia:
Poland played their first officially sanctioned international outside of Europe. I believe the teams were comprised of Australian heritage players and it was used a sa warm up the the Emerging nations Tournament. For that reason many fringe players were included.
From the outset Poland hit the ground running and were soon ahead on the scoreboard. The half time score was 16-0 in their favour. The second half was a repeat of the first, with another 16 unanswered points scored by the Polish side.
