UK SL Season Summary: 2017

It's all over for the 2017 season so time to reflect. The good and the bad can be looked at and dissected. We'll get the negative over first and then we'll look at the upside.

Negative:

The competition wants more revenue and a continued problem is getting broadcasters to get involved. It's a fantastic sporting spectacle that easily translates to people new to the game and works well when viewed on media.

The game needs the Roman Abramovich's of this world to get into owning a team. It's relatively cheap to get into and has huge potential. If any of you readers rub shoulders with this sort of person, have a quiet word. They will thank you for it as it's almost effectively getting in on the ground floor.

Castleford Tigers falling over at the end.

Positive:

The Castleford Tigers winning the league for the first time in its history.

The unpredictable nature of the competition was present (again) and made things more exciting.

Virtually every game had something riding on it. That's rare in sport.

The overall quality of officiating. Compared to some other sports, the number of poor decisions is very low.

Chart Below: The first points column is the regular league season, won by Castleford by a country mile from Leeds (this was after 23 rounds). The lowest ranked side got 5 points (Widnes). Then comes the finals with Leeds taking the win from Castleford. The Challenge Cup was the decider with Cas' out in the quarter finals.

Leeds were the most successful club based on consistency in all competitions (50 points), with Hull FC just second with 48. Cas' got 42 points.
